The Niger Delta has been a hotbed for illegal oil activities, but the Nigerian Army and other security forces have recently made a major breakthrough. In a series of coordinated operations, they’ve cracked down on oil theft, seizing a massive amount of stolen crude oil and dismantling numerous illegal refineries.
Here’s a quick rundown of what went down:
- Over 60,000 litres of stolen oil recovered: That’s a huge loss for the criminals and a win for Nigeria.
- 32 illegal refineries destroyed: These operations are a significant disruption to the illegal oil trade in the region.
- 14 boats used for illicit activities deactivated: These vessels were key in transporting stolen oil, now they’re out of commission.
- 15 oil thieves arrested: The authorities are sending a clear message: oil theft won’t go unpunished.
Massive Crackdown on Illegal Refineries
The operations, which ran from January 6th to 12th, 2025, were a coordinated effort to tackle the rampant issue of oil theft. Troops targeted various locations in Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, and Akwa Ibom States, where illegal oil activities are common. The level of sophistication of some of these illegal operations is shocking.
Rivers State: A Hotbed of Illegal Activity
In Rivers State, the troops made several significant busts. In the Bille general area, seven illegal refining sites were confiscated, along with over 20,000 liters of stolen crude. Two wooden boats used in these illicit operations were also destroyed. Along the Imo River stretch, another ten illegal refining sites were deactivated. The troops didn’t stop there: in Odagwa, they intercepted three boats carrying over 12,000 litres of stolen crude, and they even arrested three suspects on the spot. In Nkisa, they found a reservoir laden with over 1,200 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and sacks containing over 1,600 litres of crude. There is a massive organized crime network behind this, it’s not just a few individuals.
Bayelsa State: More Illegal Sites Uncovered
In Bayelsa State, the troops discovered and dismantled an illegal refining site at Baberegbene in Southern Ijaw LGA, intercepting a boat with 1,500 liters of stolen crude. They also took out another site at Emago-Kugbo and Oluasiri areas in Nembe LGA. Although the quantity of stolen products was not quantified at the last location, it’s still a win for Nigeria.
Delta and Akwa Ibom: Maintaining a Strong Presence
While no specific seizures were mentioned in Delta and Akwa Ibom states, troops continue to maintain a visible presence, effectively denying criminals any freedom to operate. This shows the commitment of the Nigerian military to completely wipe out illegal refining in the region.
Economic Impact and Future Implications
According to Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah, the recovered stolen products are valued at millions of naira. This operation is a major hit against the oil thieves’ operations and is hoped that it has a positive economic impact for Nigeria. Major General Jamal Abdussalam, while commending the troops for their achievements, urged them to continue denying criminals freedom of action in the region, which is aimed at increasing oil production and creating a conducive environment for seamless exploration activities. This also shows the commitment of the Nigerian military to the economic recovery of the country. It is hoped that with their combined forces, illegal oil refining can be put to an end.
This recent crackdown is a testament to Nigeria’s commitment to fighting oil theft. It’s a move that will not only impact the economy positively, but will also ensure that the Niger Delta region becomes safer.
