ECOWAS Celebrates 50 Years: Tinubu Demands Real Change

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu didn’t hold back at the 50th-anniversary celebration of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). He made it clear: it’s time for ECOWAS leaders to stop making empty promises and start delivering real results for the people.

Youth Empowerment: The Key to ECOWAS’s Future

Tinubu stressed that young people and women aren’t just the future; they’re the driving force right now. He called for serious investment in their education, entrepreneurship, and leadership skills. “We must mentor them,” he said, “Their success is the key to the future and stability and prosperity of ECOWAS.”
Nigeria, with a median age of approximately 18 years, stands to benefit significantly from prioritizing youth empowerment initiatives.

From Talk to Action: ECOWAS Must Deliver

While acknowledging ECOWAS’s achievements in trade, peacekeeping, and democracy, Tinubu pointed out the slow pace of implementation. “We are lagging behind on implementation, and I urge all member states to match policy with action,” he stated. He wants citizens to feel the actual impact of their shared efforts.

Nigeria’s Commitment: Leading the Way Forward

Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to West Africa by continuing technical assistance and regional capacity-building through the Technical Aid Corps. For nearly 40 years, Nigeria has supported regional capacity building, deploying skilled professionals to ECOWAS countries.

Addressing Key Challenges: Security, Food Crisis, and More

Tinubu also recognized the ongoing challenges of security, food crises, and implementation gaps that continue to test ECOWAS’s strength. He supports efforts in regional security, counter-terrorism, digital transformation, and agricultural reform. Recent data from the World Food Programme indicates that West Africa faces some of the highest levels of food insecurity, underscoring the urgency of these reforms.

Looking Ahead: A Borderless, Prosperous West Africa

Tinubu concluded with a vision of a borderless, prosperous, and peaceful West Africa, where everyone has opportunities regardless of where they live. “This Golden Jubilee is not merely a celebration of the past, but a summons to shape the future,” he said.
