When Disaster Strikes: Kogi Floods 2024
The 2024 floods in Kogi State were particularly brutal, leaving many families without homes, access to clean water, or the means to provide for themselves. The international community, recognizing the urgent need, launched a significant intervention. The European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), along with the International Federation of Red Cross and Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Nigerian Red Cross, spearheaded a project to deliver crucial relief and recovery items.
Relief Reaches the Needy
The relief effort targeted the most vulnerable communities in Kogi State. Acting Secretary of the Kogi State branch of the Nigeria Red Cross, Abdullahi Abubakar, explained that the IFRC implemented a series of humanitarian interventions under the ECHO project to distribute much-needed aid to thousands of flood-affected households in Kogi, Delta, and Anambra States.
Where Did the Aid Go?
1,100 households across three of the most affected local government areas—Idah, Kogi, and Lokoja—benefitted from this project. Specifically:
- Idah: Three communities (Alla-Ogane, Alla-Atenoguma, and Alla-Ichala) received aid for 300 households.
- Lokoja: Four communities (Galilee, Sarkin Noma, Edo, and Kampe) received aid for 400 households.
- Kogi Local Government: Four communities (Ogbangede, Irenodu, Onumaye/Edimose, and Edegaki) received aid for 400 households.
The selection process was carefully designed to prioritize the most vulnerable people, including those over 60, the sick, those with disabilities, and pregnant women. Communities hit hardest by the flood were also given precedence.
What Was Distributed?
The aid wasn’t just limited to physical supplies. The 1,100 households received:
- 20-liter Jerrycans: Crucial for storing and transporting clean water.
- Buckets: Useful for multiple household tasks.
- Aqua Tabs: Water purification tablets ensuring access to safe drinking water.
- Preloaded ATM Cards: Each card contained N77,000 to help families rebuild their lives. This amount is about $50 USD at the current exchange rate.
A Community’s Response
Alh. Ahmed Ibrahim, an assistant community leader from Edegaki, shared his gratitude. He highlighted that while the community always faces flooding, this aid was unique. Unlike past experiences, where NGOs promised help and did not deliver, the Nigeria Red Cross and their partners kept their promise.
He also noted that the community has been sharing the supplies among themselves to ensure that even those not initially selected benefit. The generosity and solidarity of the community is a testament to their resilience.
The Impact of the Relief
The distributed items and cash have had a transformative impact on the lives of those affected. Here is how:
- Education: Families have been able to pay school fees, ensuring that children’s education isn’t disrupted by the floods.
- Housing: Many were able to repair their homes, providing them with a safe place to live.
- Food: The money enabled them to buy food and thus avoid hunger.
- Clean Water: The jerrycans, buckets, and aqua tabs gave them much-needed access to safe drinking water.
Looking Ahead
The successful intervention in Kogi State highlights the importance of international cooperation and community engagement in disaster relief. The efforts of ECHO, the Red Cross, and other partners have not only provided much-needed aid but also instilled a sense of hope among the affected populations.
It also underscores how communities affected by disasters can unite and contribute to recovery efforts, showing their strength and resilience.
