  • Hero Honored: Customs officer receives N5 million for arresting a fleeing ritualist.
  • Philanthropic Gesture: Mr. Onunkwo emphasizes the importance of moral renaissance.
  • Integrity Pays: The reward encourages honesty and accountability in Nigeria.

Customs Officer’s Heroic Act

Prince Ugochukwu Orji, a dedicated Customs officer, was on duty at the Seme Border when Levi Obieze, a suspected ritualist and fake native doctor wanted in Enugu State, attempted to cross into Benin Republic. Recalling Obieze’s face from social media, Orji swiftly intercepted and apprehended him.

The Reward for Integrity

Mr. Ebuka Onunkwo, the Chairman/CEO of Seahorse Lubricant Industries Ltd, hosted Prince Orji at his residence and presented him with a N5 million cheque. Onunkwo, also a senatorial aspirant, stated that the gesture was part of his company’s corporate social responsibility.

A Call for Moral Renaissance

“Nigeria still has men of honour,” Onunkwo declared. “Ugochukwu stood in the gap when it mattered. In a system where many are tempted to sell their conscience, he chose to uphold the law.”

He further emphasized that Seahorse’s gift was to appreciate Orji’s bravery and encourage a culture of truth and accountability. He urged the Nigerian Immigration Service to officially recognize and reward Orji’s exemplary conduct.

The Arrest: A Bribe Refused

Narrating the events of the arrest, Mr. Orji revealed that Obieze initially attempted to bribe him, offering increasingly large sums of money to be released.

“I pretended to cooperate just to detain him without raising alarm,” Orji explained. After confirming Obieze’s identity with his superior, he handcuffed him and secured incriminating voice notes from his phone.

The Bigger Picture: Corruption in Nigeria

This incident shines a spotlight on the ongoing issue of corruption in Nigeria. While instances of bribery are common, Mr. Orji’s refusal to compromise his integrity is a beacon of hope. According to Transparency International, Nigeria consistently ranks high on the Corruption Perception Index, highlighting the need for more individuals like Prince Orji who prioritize honesty and accountability.

Rewarding such behavior can create a ripple effect, encouraging others to stand firm against corruption and uphold the law.

Looking Ahead

Mr. Onunkwo’s generous act serves as a reminder that integrity and bravery should be celebrated and rewarded. It is hoped that this event will inspire others to choose honesty over corruption and contribute to a more ethical society in Nigeria.
