Major Road Project in Nigeria Hits Snag! Levant Contract Terminated!

The Nigerian government has terminated a major road construction contract due to unacceptable delays and lack of performance. This decision throws the future of a critical infrastructure project into question, leaving commuters and businesses in limbo. Read on to find out the details of this developing story and what it means for the region.

  • Levant Construction’s contract for the Benin-Sapele-Warri Road (Section 1) has been terminated.
  • The termination is due to the company’s failure to meet project expectations.
  • Other construction companies, GELD Construction Ltd and SKECC Nigeria Ltd, are being urged to speed up their work.
  • Governors of Delta and Edo states are commended for their interventions on the road project.
  • The Minister of Works assures that the government is committed to improving road infrastructure across Nigeria.

Breaking News: Levant Construction OUT!

Big drama in the world of Nigerian infrastructure! The Federal Government, led by the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has officially pulled the plug on Levant Construction Ltd’s contract. They were in charge of reconstructing the Benin-Sapele-Warri Road (Section 1: Benin–Imasabor). The reason? Let’s just say they weren’t exactly burning rubber on the project.

What Went Wrong?

According to Minister Umahi, Levant Construction simply didn’t deliver. Despite warnings and interventions, the company failed to meet the expected milestones. The last straw was when they received a termination notice and didn’t bother to remobilize or show any signs of improvement. Ouch!

“We have three sections there. We have the Levant section. Unfortunately, Levant has not lived up to expectations…Levant has since left the site. We gave them a series of warning letters. We also gave them the last termination notice. ” Umahi Stated.

EFCC Incoming?

Things could get even messier for Levant. Minister Umahi has directed the Permanent Secretary to terminate the contract officially and demand repayment of the advance payment guarantee (APG) from their bank. If they fail to comply, the case could be handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Talk about adding insult to injury!

Hope on the Horizon: GELD and SKECC to the Rescue?

It’s not all doom and gloom, though. Umahi has expressed satisfaction with the progress of GELD Construction Ltd and SKECC Nigeria Ltd, who are working on other sections of the same road project. He’s urging them to step up their game and ensure timely completion.

Governors to the Rescue!

A big shoutout to the governors of Delta and Edo states, Sheriff Oborevwori and Monday Okpebholo, respectively! They’ve been praised for their interventions in getting parts of the road project done. Governor Oborevwori is even building three flyovers – fancy! Governor Okpebholo is intervening in that section too.

Concrete Plans for the Future

The Minister also mentioned new plans for using reinforced concrete for some sections of the road, drawing inspiration from the quality work being done in Delta State. This could mean a more durable and long-lasting road for everyone.

Umahi Claps Back at Critics!

Senator Umahi also addressed criticisms about project distribution, dismissing claims that the South is favored over the North. He emphasized that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is committed to equitable development across all regions of Nigeria.

Ongoing Projects in the North

Umahi highlighted ongoing projects in the North, such as the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road, to counter claims of regional bias. He stressed that infrastructure development should benefit all Nigerians, regardless of their location.

What’s Next?

The termination of Levant’s contract raises questions about the future of the Benin-Sapele-Warri Road project. Will GELD and SKECC be able to pick up the slack? Will the EFCC get involved? Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops!
