Sanwo-Olu Survives! Tinubu Ends Lagos Political Drama After GAC Intervention

The political climate in Lagos State was tense, with whispers of a rift between Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. But fear not, Lagosians! The storm has passed. A reconciliation, brokered by the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), has seemingly put an end to the speculation. Here’s what you need to know:
  • The Beef is Over: President Tinubu has reportedly forgiven Sanwo-Olu after a plea from the GAC.
  • Loyalty Reigns: Sanwo-Olu and the GAC reaffirmed their support for Tinubu.
  • Elections Still On: Local government elections are still scheduled for July 12th.
  • PDP in Shambles?: Key PDP members are reportedly defecting to the APC.

Tinubu to Sanwo-Olu: “Continue With Your Work”

The reconciliation meeting, held at President Tinubu’s private residence in Ikoyi, Lagos, saw Tinubu declaring, “All is over. There is no need to beat around the bush or go into unnecessary talk. Continue with your work.” This statement, made in the presence of the GAC, effectively squashed the rumors of a fallout. The GAC, the apex decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, played a crucial role in mediating the situation. Headed by Prince Tajudeen Olusi, they accompanied Sanwo-Olu to plead for forgiveness and reaffirm their loyalty.

How the Drama Unfolded

In the days leading up to the meeting, Sanwo-Olu’s absence from major public events attended by Tinubu fueled speculation of a rift. The tension peaked when Tinubu seemingly snubbed Sanwo-Olu during a public event. Sources reveal that influential GAC members, alarmed by the escalating situation, worked behind the scenes to facilitate the reconciliation. Olusi reportedly appealed to Tinubu, acknowledging the President’s displeasure with certain happenings in Lagos.

According to sources present at the meeting, Tinubu responded to the GAC’s plea by saying, “It’s all over now. All is forgiven.” He also greenlit the planned local government elections, stating, “I am too busy for council matters. Go ahead and ensure the right thing is done. Give fair opportunities to everyone.” In a show of reconciliation, Sanwo-Olu and the GAC members reportedly prostrated before the President.

Why the Fallout?

While neither Tinubu nor Sanwo-Olu publicly confirmed a dispute, APC insiders hinted at growing friction. Sanwo-Olu’s alleged attempts to assert independence by sidelining Tinubu loyalists within the state’s political structure were reportedly a major point of contention. One particular issue was the perceived attempt to weaken the influence of Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, a close Tinubu ally. These moves allegedly involved strategic reshuffling of appointments, which didn’t sit well with the President.

Royal Intervention

Before the GAC-led visit, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, also visited President Tinubu. While the monarch stated that his visit was a courtesy call for the Sallah break, palace insiders suggest that royal intervention was also part of the mediation efforts. The Ooni of Ife holds significant influence in Nigerian politics and is often involved in conflict resolution.

Sanwo-Olu’s Reaction

Following the GAC meeting, Sanwo-Olu dismissed reports of any feud with the President. “Do you see any discord? Can’t you see when you are smiling, I’m smiling? There’s none. He’s my father, he’s my leader,” he told journalists. He described the meeting as a routine festive visit by the GAC and used the opportunity to support Tinubu’s economic policies, citing recent improvements. “The economy has made a positive bend. What will be the basis of any protest? Give this President more time,” he said.

PDP Imploding?

Amidst the APC reconciliation, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) appears to be facing internal turmoil. Segun Sowunmi, a former spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar, paid a Sallah homage to President Tinubu, fueling speculation of a possible defection. Additionally, members of the Lagos State Working Committee (SWC) of the PDP, along with other prominent members, are expected to announce their defection to the All Progressives Congress today. This comes after Dr. Olajide Adediran (Jandor), the 2023 PDP governorship candidate, defected to the APC earlier this year, citing indiscipline within the PDP.

Akwa Ibom: Governor’s Defection Sparks Debate

In other political news, former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel, has remained silent following the defection of his successor, Governor Umo Eno, from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress. Emmanuel clarified his decision not to comment, reiterating his commitment to non-interference in the current administration’s affairs.

The dust has settled (for now) in Lagos. The reconciliation between Tinubu and Sanwo-Olu ensures stability within the state’s APC leadership. The coming months will reveal whether the peace holds and how it impacts the political landscape leading up to the 2027 elections. Stay tuned!
