The Dapo Abiodun-led administration in Ogun State is making waves with its ambitious urban regeneration project in the Ibara Government Reservation Area (GRA) of Abeokuta. What was once a dilapidated eyesore is rapidly transforming into a symbol of modern living, with over 150 new houses already built out of more than 200 planned. This project isn’t just about bricks and mortar; it’s about restoring dignity and providing quality housing for the people of Ogun State.
Ibara GRA Transformation: A New Dawn for Abeokuta
Governor Dapo Abiodun recently took stock of the progress at the Ibara GRA, and the results are impressive. He envisions Abeokuta, the state capital, boasting modern homes that truly reflect its status. The governor didn’t mince words when describing the previous state of the GRA. He highlighted that the dilapidated structures were not only an embarrassment but also a breeding ground for criminal activities, with illegal occupants having turned the buildings into their personal property.
From Eyesore to Estate: The Regeneration Process
The journey to transform the Ibara GRA began in March, following extensive town hall meetings and consultations with the existing residents. Governor Abiodun emphasized that while many were illegal inhabitants, his administration’s approach was not to render people homeless. Instead, they engaged in constructive dialogue, reached agreements, and facilitated a transition that previous administrations either couldn’t envision or lacked the political will to execute. The governor stated, “We were able to convince people that the future is here and now, and Ogun State capital cannot look like what it was looking like, particularly the high-brow area called the GRA in Abeokuta.”
Key Achievements So Far:
- Over 150 houses completed out of a planned 213-220.
- Other houses are at various stages of completion.
- Demolition and renovation phases successfully implemented.
The project involves houses built directly by the state government through the Ministry of Housing, as well as allocations made to other developers adhering to strict design guidelines. This phased approach ensures quality and timely delivery of these much-needed modern homes.
Beyond Abeokuta: Housing for All of Ogun State
Governor Abiodun assured that the Ibara GRA project is just the beginning. His administration is committed to replicating this success in other Government Reservation Areas across the state. Residents in Yewa can look forward to affordable housing units in Ilaro, while Kobape is set to have nearly 600 houses. Other areas like Sagamu, Iperu, and Ijebu-Ode are also slated for similar housing scheme developments.
Addressing Detractors and Delivering on Promises
In his remarks, the governor also addressed critics and political opponents. He stated that his administration remains focused on fulfilling the mandate given by the people of Ogun State and is accountable to them, not to faceless individuals or sponsored media narratives on social media platforms. He proudly challenged his detractors, asserting that his government has achieved more in six years regarding road construction than others have in 16 years, a testament to their commitment and foresight.
This regeneration project is a clear demonstration of Ogun State’s commitment to improving the living standards of its citizens by providing them with quality, modern housing infrastructure.
