Oko-Oba Abattoir SHUT DOWN! Lagos Govt. Slams Unhygienic Meat Market

The Lagos State Government has dropped the hammer on the Oko-Oba Abattoir in Agege, and things are getting serious! This popular meat market has been shut down until further notice. Why? Because the government is not playing around with public health and environmental safety. Get the full gist below!
  • Oko-Oba Abattoir in Agege closed due to unsanitary conditions.
  • Government demands full compliance with environmental laws.
  • Previous interventions and warnings were ignored.
  • Residents had complained about the mess.
  • The abattoir will stay closed until standards are met.

Breaking: Oko-Oba Abattoir Locked Up!

If you were planning on getting your meat from Oko-Oba Abattoir in Agege, you’re out of luck! The Lagos State Government has officially shut it down. According to Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, the closure will remain in effect until the operators clean up their act and follow the rules.

Why the Shutdown? The Dirty Details

So, what’s the big deal? Well, apparently, the abattoir has been a hot mess. We’re talking waste mismanagement, poor sanitation, and meat handling practices that would make you lose your appetite. LASEPA officials have been on their case, but things haven’t improved.

Wahab made it clear that the government isn’t messing around, stating, “The abattoir will remain closed until the operators are ready to engage with the government and adhere to minimum operating standards.” Ouch!

Ignoring the Warnings

Here’s the kicker: this isn’t the first time the government has tried to whip the abattoir into shape. They even sent stakeholders abroad to learn modern slaughtering techniques! But, according to reports, these efforts have been largely ignored. It’s like they just don’t care!

Living in Animal Pens?

It gets worse! Apparently, some operators have been using the animal pens as living quarters. Can you imagine? And when enforcement officers tried to intervene, some operators reportedly moved their slaughter activities to abandoned gas stations and roadsides. Total madness!

Lagos is NOT a Jungle!

Wahab emphasized that Lagos is not a “Hobbesian state” – meaning there are rules, and people need to follow them. He criticized the concessionaire (Harmony) and the operators’ leader (Galadima) for letting untreated animal waste flow into public drains. Seriously, guys? That’s just nasty!

Climate Change Woes and Drainage Issues

But wait, there’s more! Wahab also addressed broader environmental issues in Lagos, like climate change-induced sea level rise and flash flooding. He mentioned that over 1,141 contraventions had been removed to improve drainage systems. The government is also warning developers against building on wetlands.

What’s Next?

The Oko-Oba Abattoir will remain closed until the operators get their act together. The government is urging residents to take ownership of their environment and support climate mitigation efforts. So, plant a tree, clean up your surroundings, and let’s make Lagos a cleaner, healthier place for everyone!
