Renewed Hope Initiative: Fighting Hunger Across Nigeria

Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, is doubling down on the administration’s promise to fight food insecurity. Through the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), she’s ensuring that vulnerable Nigerians get the food assistance they desperately need. This initiative, which kicked off on March 8, 2024, is set to continue delivering vital support to women, people with disabilities, and marginalized communities throughout the country.

Represented by the Wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima, at a recent event in Umuahia, Abia State, the First Lady handed over food supplies to Mrs. Priscilla Otti, the RHI Coordinator for Abia State. Senator Oluremi Tinubu emphasized the importance of using these resources for the well-being of families, highlighting the positive impact RHI is making nationwide.

What’s the Impact So Far?

Since its launch, the Food Outreach Scheme has made significant strides, reaching:

  • Benue
  • Cross River
  • Delta
  • Edo
  • Ekiti
  • Gombe
  • Kano
  • Kogi
  • Kwara
  • Nasarawa
  • Oyo
  • Federal Capital Territory (FCT)

Next in line are Enugu and Kaduna, as the initiative aims to cover one state per month. This program is made possible through the generous support of The Abdul Samad Rabiu Africa Initiative (ASR Africa) and an anonymous donor.

What’s Next for the Renewed Hope Initiative?

Looking ahead to 2025, the First Lady announced exciting new initiatives under RHI’s five core pillars:

Social Investment

RHI is teaming up with the Federal Ministry of Environment to launch ‘The Environment Club’ for senior secondary school students and ‘The Environment Society’ for tertiary students. These clubs will promote environmental cleanliness and tree planting, fostering a sense of responsibility among the youth.

Economic Empowerment

Get ready for a boost! RHI plans to distribute grants of ₦200,000 each to 250 people with disabilities in every state and the FCT. This financial support will help them kickstart or revitalize their small businesses, creating opportunities for self-sufficiency.

Education

The ‘Flow with Confidence’ program is set to distribute 10,000 packs of sanitary pads—enough for an entire year—to young girls, particularly in rural areas. This initiative aims to keep girls in school throughout their menstrual cycle, ensuring they don’t miss out on their education.

Local Leaders Applaud the Initiative

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State praised the initiative and expressed his administration’s commitment to partnering with organizations like RHI. Mrs. Otti also highlighted the significant impact the Food Outreach has had on families in the state, assuring the First Lady of continued support and equitable distribution of the items.

ASR Africa’s Continued Support

Dr. Ubon Udoh, Managing Director of ASR Africa, commended the sustainable impact of RHI’s work and pledged ongoing support from the Abdul Samad Rabiu Africa Initiative, ensuring the initiative can continue to reach those who need it most.

The Renewed Hope Initiative is truly making waves, bringing hope and tangible support to vulnerable Nigerians across the country. With a focus on food security, empowerment, and education, this initiative is paving the way for a brighter future.
