Rivers Assembly Roars Back! Set to Grill Ex-Admin on Millions Spent!

The Rivers State House of Assembly has officially reconvened after a six-month hiatus, and they’re not wasting any time! Their primary mission? To get to the bottom of how much money the former Military Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd), actually received and spent during his tenure. This move comes after the President’s decision to lift the emergency rule that had put a temporary hold on both the executive and legislative arms of the state government. The lawmakers are keen to understand the financial dealings of the past six months, especially since the current Assembly had no say in the budget prepared by the National Assembly. But that’s not all – they’re also charting a course for the next two years, aiming to work hand-in-hand with Governor Siminalayi Fubara and respect the peace agreement brokered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Assembly Back in Session with a Mission

The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, announced the resolutions after a lively voice vote, with about 26 members present and accounted for. The Deputy Speaker, Dumle Maol, was notably absent. The Assembly’s agenda is packed:

  • Budget Scrutiny: A deep dive into the budget and expenditures made under the previous administration. The Speaker pointed out, “We never sighted the budget by the National Assembly but only read it on the pages of Newspapers. We don’t know is contained.”
  • Legislative Agenda: Setting priorities for the remaining two years of the current Assembly’s term.
  • Executive Collaboration: Pledging to work with Governor Fubara and adhere to the peace pact.
  • New Appropriation Law: Calling on the Governor to initiate the process for a new Appropriation Law to address the state’s current financial needs.
  • Commissioner Nominees: Urging Governor Fubara to submit names for the State Executive Council.

Why the Urgency?

The lawmakers feel it’s crucial to get a clear picture of the state’s finances. The emergency rule imposed by the President meant that the 10th Assembly couldn’t influence the budget that was eventually passed. Now, they want to ensure transparency and accountability for the period when Vice Admiral Ibas was at the helm. This includes understanding contracts awarded and how funds from the state’s consolidated revenue were utilized.

A Nod to Peace and Democracy

In a significant move, the Assembly passed a resolution commending President Tinubu for restoring democratic institutions in Rivers State. They also affirmed their commitment to upholding the terms of the peace parley and the Nigerian Constitution. This shows a united front in moving the state forward under the current leadership.

Looking Ahead

The legislative session has been adjourned until 10 am on Monday, September 22nd. With a clear mandate to scrutinize past expenditures and outline future legislative goals, the Rivers State House of Assembly is poised to play a pivotal role in the state’s governance and development. The path ahead requires collaboration between the executive and legislative branches to ensure Rivers State thrives.
