Atiku Stripped of Title: What’s Going On?
Hold up! The Adamawa State Government just dropped a bombshell. They’ve taken back the traditional title of Waziri Adamawa from Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President. This is huge news, and everyone’s asking, ‘Why now?’
The Official Reason: It’s All About Indigenes
According to a circular issued by Mrs. Adama Felicity Mamman, the Permanent Secretary of the Department of Chieftaincy Affairs, there’s a new rule in town. Apparently, anyone holding a traditional title or serving on an emirate council must be an indigene of the specific chiefdom. This decision follows a restructuring of traditional institutions after new chiefdoms were created by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri.
The Waziri Adamawa is traditionally the number two guy in the Adamawa Emirate, right after the Lamido of Adamawa. But here’s the catch: only people from Yola South, Yola North, Girei, Mayo-Belwa, Song, and Zumo districts can be kingmakers or council members in the Adamawa Emirate from now on. Since Atiku hails from Jada Local Government Area (part of the Ganye Chiefdom), he’s automatically out.
Political Games? Or Just Administration?
While the government is saying it’s just administrative reforms, some people smell politics. Governor Fintiri and Atiku were on the same side (Peoples Democratic Party) during the 2023 elections, but now they seem to be on opposite sides of the fence.
Atiku has been seen hanging out with other political big shots like Nasir El-Rufai, Peter Obi, and Aishatu Binani, sparking rumors of a new opposition coalition for the 2027 elections. Could this title revocation be a move to clip Atiku’s wings?
Controversial New Bill: More Power to the Governor?
There’s also a new bill making its way through the Adamawa State House of Assembly that’s raising eyebrows. This bill would give the governor the power to kick out traditional rulers deemed unfit and pick their replacements directly. Critics are worried that this would give the governor way too much power.
What Does This Mean for Adamawa State?
This whole situation is more than just a simple title change. It raises some serious questions about the future of traditional institutions in Adamawa State and the power dynamics between key political players. What will Atiku do next? And how will this affect the political landscape leading up to 2027?
