Edo First Lady Champions Stronger Laws for Women & Kids! Find Out Why!

The First Lady of Edo State is on a mission! She’s calling for a major review of existing laws to make sure women and children in Edo State get the protection they deserve. Find out how she’s teaming up with legal experts and community groups to make it happen.

  • Key Focus: Strengthening laws for women and children’s protection.
  • Collaborative Efforts: Partnering with FIDA and FOMWA.
  • Urgent Cases: Addressing delays in justice for vulnerable victims.
  • Government Support: Governor’s commitment to safeguarding rights.

Why Stronger Laws are Needed NOW!

Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, didn’t hold back during a recent meeting with the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA). She stressed the urgent need to revamp some of our laws so that they actually protect women and children effectively. It’s not just about having laws on the books, it’s about making sure they work!

Teaming Up for Change

The First Lady is all about teamwork. She’s actively seeking collaboration with organizations like FIDA to tackle the challenges that women and children face in Edo State. During FIDA’s visit to the Government House in Benin City, she praised their work in fighting human rights violations and promised to back initiatives that empower women and promote gender equality.

Justice Delayed is Justice Denied!

Mrs. Anani highlighted a major problem: slow justice. “We need to review many of our laws as some are ineffective. Justice delayed is justice denied,” she stated. She pointed to a specific case – the Okpella girl who was allegedly raped on December 24, 2024 – which is still dragging on. She’s pushing for these types of cases to be fast-tracked through the system.

The Governor’s Commitment

The First Lady made it clear that the Edo State Governor, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, is fully on board with this mission. He’s dedicated to protecting women and children and will do whatever it takes to ensure their rights are protected. This sends a powerful message that the government is taking these issues seriously.

FIDA’s Role in Protecting the Vulnerable

Mrs. Francisca Elema, the Edo State Chairperson of FIDA, expressed her gratitude to the First Lady for her commitment to the people of Edo State. She emphasized FIDA’s dedication to protecting vulnerable women and children through legal means. FIDA also plays an important role in offering legal aid and representation to those who can’t afford it.

Challenges and Needs

FIDA isn’t without its challenges. Mrs. Elema mentioned issues like unfinished infrastructure, non-functional vehicles, and funding shortages. She appealed to the First Lady for support in overcoming these obstacles so that FIDA can continue its vital work. A fully functional FIDA benefits the whole state.

Working with Muslim Women for a Safer Society

The First Lady also met with a delegation from the Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria (FOMWA), led by Hajiya (Mrs.) Audu Usenat Esohe. FOMWA is a faith-based organization that works to improve the lives of Muslim women and families across Nigeria.

Combating Gender-Based Violence

FOMWA is keen to collaborate on efforts to fight gender-based violence (GBV) and empower women. They’re also seeking support for their activities, including a request for a coaster bus to help them reach more communities. The First Lady pledged her support, emphasizing the importance of unity, solidarity, and peace. “In any way we could be of great assistance, our doors are open to you,” she assured them.

The Bottom Line

The Edo State First Lady’s commitment to strengthening laws and collaborating with organizations like FIDA and FOMWA is a positive step towards creating a safer and more just society for women and children in Edo State. It’s a reminder that protecting the vulnerable requires a collective effort from government, legal professionals, community groups, and individuals.
