Ohanaeze Sounds Alarm: Kanu’s Imprisonment Hurts All Igbos
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo is seriously not happy about Nnamdi Kanu still being in jail. They’re saying it feels like the whole Igbo tribe is locked up with him! According to Ohanaeze President General, John Azuta-Mbata, keeping Kanu detained, even after he was granted bail by a real court in Nigeria, is a big problem. They feel like the trial has been dragging on for way too long – like, almost 10 years since 2015!
Ten Years? This Trial is Taking Forever!
Azuta-Mbata pointed out that they even had to move their retreat because of Kanu’s court date. This shows just how important this issue is to the Igbo people. “Ohanaeze was making a point by postponing the retreat to redirect the attention of all Igbo to what was going on in the court on that day.
“We have had that trial going on for 10 years, what kind of trial is that? What kind of justice is that? Let every one bear in mind that, as Kanu is being incarcerated, even with a bail granted by a competent court, it is the entire Igbo that is being incarcerated. Many prerogatives are available to the government. The continuous delay in this trial is not acceptable to Ndigbo.
“As we proceed to the next election, let us put the interest of our people first,” he stated.
Time to Rebuild: Focusing on Igbo Values
The theme of the retreat was “Rebuilding our foundation,” which shows they want to bring back the good old days of strong Igbo values. The Anglican Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Rt Rev Samuel Ike, urged the Ohanaeze leadership to find new ways to get money so they don’t have to rely on the government. He wants them to focus on justice and get rid of the influence of “moneybags” – people with lots of money but no morals.
