Justice System Data at Risk? Group Demands Stronger Protection!

A leading advocacy group is sounding the alarm about the state of data protection within Nigeria’s justice system. They warn that the current digital infrastructure is not up to par, leading to potential loss of critical case files and delays in justice. Find out why they are calling for urgent action!
  • Urgent Appeal: Open Society on Justice Reform Project (OSJRP) demands better data protection.
  • Digital Disaster: Poor infrastructure is causing case file losses and trial delays.
  • Lagos Example: Arson attack exposed vulnerabilities in the judicial system’s digital records.
  • Human Rights at Stake: Group stresses data protection is vital for due process.

Data Backup: More Than Just IT

The Open Society on Justice Reform Project (OSJRP) is making a big push for stakeholders in the judiciary to recognize how crucial data protection is. They argue that data backup isn’t just some techy requirement; it’s a core part of keeping the justice system honest and reliable.

The Danger of Digital Neglect

Mr. Sam Akpologun, the Executive Director, emphasized that a justice sector that is both efficient and accountable depends on protecting legal data. He said that protecting this data directly safeguards human rights, ensures due process, and provides access to justice for all.

According to him, the biggest problem is a seriously lacking digital setup and poor data handling within the courts. It’s like building a house on sand – sooner or later, it’s going to crumble.

Case Files Vanishing? Trials Delayed?

Imagine this: vital case files going missing, trials getting dragged out, and a justice system that just isn’t transparent. That’s the reality when data backup isn’t taken seriously. The OSJRP warns that without proper measures, sensitive legal documents are vulnerable to corruption, tampering, and even accidental destruction.

Lagos Judiciary: A Wake-Up Call

The arson attack on the Lagos High Court during the #EndSARS protests serves as a stark example of what can happen when digital security is lacking. The oldest judicial building in Nigeria was set ablaze, resulting in the loss of irreplaceable files and data.

Partial Digitization: A Silver Lining

While the destruction was devastating, the OSJRP noted that the partial digitization of records through the Digital Information Litigation (DIL) system (started in 2013) helped in recovering some of the lost data. However, the Lagos judicial system is still struggling to fully recover.

The Call to Action

The message is clear: data backup is a critical component of justice administration and should be treated as a top priority.

Why This Matters to You

This isn’t just about courtrooms and legal jargon. It affects everyone. A secure and reliable justice system protects your rights, ensures fairness, and holds those in power accountable. When data is at risk, so is justice.
