Is the PDP Falling Apart?
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing a major crisis! A storm of defections and internal squabbles has thrown the party into chaos, and its governors are scrambling to keep it from collapsing. Things are so tense that a meeting was called in Abuja to try and sort things out.
Wike’s Surprise Appearance
One of the biggest surprises was the arrival of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Dressed in a black jalabiya and white cap, Wike’s presence added even more drama to an already tense situation. Could he be the key to saving the PDP, or is he adding fuel to the fire?

The meeting was held at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro and included current and former PDP governors, as well as other big names in the party. Some of the attendees were:

What’s on the Agenda?
The leaders are discussing some pretty serious stuff, including:
- How to fix the internal problems causing people to jump ship to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
- Strategies to bring the party together and stop more defections.
- What to do about the upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on May 27.
- Whether to hold a convention in August.
There’s a lot of worry that the NEC meeting might be disrupted or even cancelled if these issues aren’t dealt with ASAP. This would also mess up the plans for the August convention.
The Defection Disaster
The PDP has been hit hard by recent defections. Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Ifeanyi Okowa, and the entire PDP structure in the state have all switched over to the APC. Ouch!
And it doesn’t stop there. Lawmakers in Jigawa State and other party members have also left for the APC. There are even rumors that the governors of Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa, as well as the only PDP governor in the Southeast, might be next.
Patience Jonathan’s Shocking Move
Adding to the drama, former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan announced that she’s supporting President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027. This could mean that former President Goodluck Jonathan won’t be running on the PDP’s ticket in 2027.
The Battle for the North
The North is reportedly unhappy with President Tinubu’s leadership and might back another Southerner to challenge him under the PDP banner. The only Southerner who could constitutionally serve just one term is Jonathan, but with Dame Jonathan’s support for Tinubu, that seems unlikely.
Atiku’s Status in Question
Another issue on the table is the position of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Even though he hasn’t officially joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP), there’s a lot of uncertainty about his commitment to the PDP. The governors want to clarify this and decide whether to give the next presidential ticket to a Southerner, with the understanding that they’ll only serve one term to allow power to rotate back to the North in 2031.
Lamido’s Bold Prediction
Despite all the chaos, former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido is optimistic. He believes that some APC members, including National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, will soon return to the PDP.
“I’m confident that all those who left the PDP will return, including Ganduje, because very soon, the APC will burst and split into factions,” Lamido said.
He also criticized the Tinubu government, saying it’s endangering Nigeria’s unity with its “failed mission, lost focus, and harsh economic policies.”
Fubara’s Calm Approach
Meanwhile, the suspended governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has said he’s not desperate to return to office. He emphasized the importance of peace and strategic approaches to resolving the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State.
The Road Ahead
With so much at stake, the PDP’s future hangs in the balance. Can Wike and the other governors find a way to unite the party and stop the defections? Or is the PDP destined for a major shakeup? Only time will tell!
