BUSTED! Nigerian Smuggler Caught with $100K Fake Cash in Ghana – Deportation Looms!

A 56-year-old Nigerian man, Aremu Timothy Adegboyega, is about to be kicked out of Ghana after getting caught smuggling fake money. He was nabbed with a whopping 80 million CFA francs – that’s over $100,000! Here’s a breakdown of how it all went down.

Quick Rundown:

  • The Crime: Smuggling counterfeit CFA francs into Ghana.
  • The Arrest: Caught at an illegal border crossing near Aflao.
  • The Verdict: Guilty! Fined and sentenced to deportation.
  • The Fallout: Fake money seized, and international connections exposed.

How He Got Caught

Back in 2023, Adegboyega was riding a motorcycle through Beat Zero, a known spot for sneaking across the Aflao border. Ghanaian Customs officers stopped him and found bundles of cash hidden on him which later turned out to be fake. Besides the CFA francs, they also found over N100,000 in Nigerian currency.

The Confession

According to ASP Isaac Anquandah, Adegboyega admitted he knew the money was fake. He said he got the counterfeit cash from a guy named Alhaji Saibu in Nigeria. Allegedly, he was working for someone called Alhaji Dials, who’s supposedly based in Côte d’Ivoire. This wasn’t Adegboyega’s first time either – police found out he’d smuggled fake money into Ghana before. This time, he was supposed to deliver the cash to someone in Abobo, Ivory Coast.

The Court’s Decision

Justice Christiana Cann of the Circuit Court in Accra didn’t hold back. She found him guilty on multiple charges, including possessing forged notes and illegal entry. He was hit with fines for the currency offense and unlawful entry. Since he couldn’t pay the fines, he is looking at a two-year jail term before getting deported.

What’s Next?

The fake money is heading to the Bank of Ghana for verification. The Ghana Revenue Authority confirmed that the seized CFA notes all had the same serial numbers, which confirmed their suspicion that they were fake.

Why This Matters

This case highlights the ongoing problem of counterfeit currency in West Africa. Fake money messes with the economy, hurts businesses, and makes life difficult for regular folks. Ghana isn’t the only country dealing with this. Nigeria, too, has its share of counterfeit currency issues. In fact, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is constantly working to crack down on fake naira notes.

This incident shows how important it is for countries to work together to stop criminals from moving fake money across borders.
