Elderly Nigerian Nabbed With Huge Cocaine Haul at Abuja Airport!

In a stunning bust, Nigeria’s anti-drug agency, the NDLEA, has nabbed a 74-year-old man attempting to smuggle a massive 11 kilogrammes of cocaine to London. The septuagenarian was intercepted at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, highlighting the persistent battle against international drug trafficking networks. This major seizure is part of a wider, intensified crackdown by the NDLEA across various states, uncovering disturbing trends in how illicit substances are being moved.

The Juicy Details of the Bust

The elderly suspect, identified as Ikwuakalom Emeka, was apprehended in the departure lounge while trying to board a British Airways flight bound for London Heathrow. Officials were shocked to discover the substantial quantity of cocaine cleverly concealed within food items. Imagine this: ground dry pepper, folks! Not only that, but the drugs were also meticulously wrapped in foil papers and balloons – a desperate attempt to fool eagle-eyed security scanners. The man apparently told investigators he was just going on a vacation. A vacation with 11 kilos of cocaine, really?

A Wider Network Exposed

This isn’t an isolated incident. The NDLEA’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, revealed that this arrest is just one piece of a larger puzzle. The agency has been conducting coordinated anti-narcotics operations nationwide, and the results are eye-opening. These operations have exposed a wider drug trafficking network that is becoming increasingly sophisticated.

More Arrests, More Drugs

Across Lagos, the NDLEA swooped down on a hotel in Victoria Island, arresting a woman named Maryam Olalowo. She was allegedly caught trying to sell cocaine and a potent strain of cannabis known as ‘Canadian Loud’. Disturbingly, she was found with her three young children, including a baby. During questioning, she pointed the finger at her husband, Ibrahim Olalowo Olatunji, who was later arrested. What’s even more shocking is that Olatunji has a prior conviction for a similar drug offense, serving two and a half years in jail back in 2015. It seems some people never learn!

Further operations in Lagos Island and Idumota Market led to the discovery of:

  • 68,000 pills of tramadol, packed and apparently headed for the Republic of Benin.
  • An alleged owner of the tramadol consignment, Nnamdi Cyprian, was arrested after 1,000 tramadol tablets were found prepared for dispatch.
  • Nwanosike Kelvin was apprehended with a staggering 47,500 ampoules of pentazocine injection found in his shop.

Nationwide Crackdown Continues

The crackdown isn’t limited to Lagos. In Kano, operatives seized a whopping 386 kilogrammes of skunk. Meanwhile, in Gwagwalada, within the Federal Capital Territory, another suspect was caught with 282.2 kilogrammes of the same substance. Edo State saw the destruction of over 4.2 tonnes of skunk from two plantations within the Egwa Forest Reserve. It’s a war on drugs, and the NDLEA is fighting on all fronts!

A Blow Against Opioid Smuggling

Adding to the successes, authorities intercepted 339,800 bottles of codeine-based syrup concealed in two containers at the Apapa Seaport in Lagos. This significant haul was the result of a joint operation involving the NDLEA, customs officials, and other security agencies, who had placed the containers under surveillance based on intelligence reports. This action alone strikes a major blow against the influx of dangerous opioids into the country.

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Maj. Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd), has praised the dedicated officers involved in these widespread operations. He emphasized the importance of maintaining this momentum to tackle both the supply and demand aspects of drug abuse. The agency’s ‘War Against Drug Abuse’ campaign continues to be a crucial part of their strategy, reaching out to schools and communities with vital sensitization programs aimed at steering young people away from the perils of drug use.
