Lagos Drug Queenpin Nabbed with Massive Cocaine Haul in Kids’ Room!

In a stunning raid that has sent shockwaves through Lagos, Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has apprehended a suspected female drug kingpin, Shodunke Simbiat, in possession of a staggering 23.5 kilogrammes of high-grade cocaine. The illicit drugs, valued at a mind-boggling N5 billion on the streets, were discovered hidden right inside her children’s room, highlighting a disturbing new low in drug trafficking operations. This significant bust is the latest victory in NDLEA’s relentless war against narcotics, building on previous successes against a notorious drug trafficking syndicate.

Major Drug Bust in Lagos: A Deeper Look

The arrest of Shodunke Simbiat marks a crucial moment in the ongoing fight against drug cartels operating within Nigeria. This operation is not an isolated incident but a continuation of efforts that previously dismantled a network led by the couple Toheebat and Lookman Dauda. Simbiat, who had been evading authorities since May 2024, was finally tracked down to her residence at 31 Onasanya Street, Surulere, Lagos. The sheer quantity and value of the seized cocaine underscore the immense threat posed by these criminal organizations.

The Syndicate’s Network and Previous Operations

NDLEA’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, revealed that the syndicate, led by the Dauda couple, was first intercepted on May 25, 2024, along the Lagos-Badagry expressway. At that time, operatives seized a massive 47.5 kilogrammes of cocaine. A subsequent raid on their home in Agbara, Ogun State, uncovered an additional 10 kilogrammes, bringing the total recovered from them to a colossal 57.5 kilogrammes. The capture of Simbiat, a key player in this organization, demonstrates NDLEA’s commitment to pursuing all members of such dangerous syndicates, no matter how deep they go underground.

More Successes Against Drug Traffickers

The Lagos operations are part of a wider, nationwide crackdown. In separate incidents:

  • At the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos, a 36-year-old businessman, Nwanwene Destiny, was apprehended with 1,020 pills of Tramadol and Tapentadol, intended for export to Milan, Italy. He expected to earn €200 from this transaction.
  • At the Seme border, a 48-year-old Beninoise national, Leocardi Josu, was caught trying to enter Nigeria with 3,400 Tramadol tablets.

NDLEA’s Continuous Efforts and Festive Season Vigilance

The NDLEA is actively engaged in community outreach through its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) initiative, conducting sensitization programs in schools, places of worship, and workplaces. NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd), commended the officers involved in these successful operations. He urged all personnel to maintain peak vigilance, especially during the upcoming festive season, and uphold the highest standards of professionalism in all their drug reduction activities.

Key Takeaways from the Busts

This series of arrests and seizures highlights several critical points:

  1. Sophistication of Traffickers: The hiding of cocaine in a children’s room shows the lengths traffickers will go to, even involving innocent spaces.
  2. Trans-border Networks: Operations clearly show these are not just local issues but involve international smuggling routes.
  3. Variety of Drugs: Beyond cocaine, the seizures include significant amounts of Tramadol, Pentazocine, Skunk, and synthetic cannabis, indicating a diverse drug market.
  4. NDLEA’s Commitment: The agency is showing unwavering dedication to dismantling drug cartels, utilizing intelligence and swift follow-up operations.

The fight against illicit drugs is ongoing, and these recent successes by the NDLEA are a testament to their resolve in safeguarding Nigerian communities.
