Big Shoes to Fill: New Leadership for Nigeria’s Oil Regulators
Our President, Bola Tinubu, has really put his foot down, sending two crucial letters to the Senate. He’s asking them to rubber-stamp the appointments of 21 sharp minds for the boards of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC). This is more than just shuffling papers; it’s about bringing in people who know their onions to steer the ship of our nation’s most vital economic engine.
Meet the Captains of Industry: Abe and Adeniji Take the Helm
First up, we have Senator Magnus Abe, a man who knows the political and economic landscape like the back of his hand. He’s been nominated to chair the NUPRC board. Abe isn’t new to this game; he’s served as a two-term Senator representing Rivers South East, he’s even been on the NNPC board, and currently leads the National Agency of the Great Green Wall. Talk about experience!
Then there’s Adegbite Ebiowei Adeniji, a learned legal mind with over three decades dedicated to energy and natural resources. He’s slated to be the chairman of the NMDPRA. Adeniji’s CV is impressive – he was a special technical advisor to the Minister of State for Petroleum, and even lent his expertise to the World Bank’s Oil & Gas Policy team, helping shape Nigeria’s petroleum sector reforms. He’s currently the managing partner at ENR Advisory. This dude surely knows his stuff about gas!
A Full Crew: Assembling the Regulatory Teams
It’s not just about the chairmen, oh no! President Tinubu has assembled a full squad of seasoned professionals. For the NUPRC board, alongside Senator Abe, we’ve got Engineer Paul Yaro Jezhi, a former TUC chairman from Kaduna, and Mr Sunday Adebayo Babalola, who used to be a deputy director at the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) before it was restructured by the PIA in 2021. They’ll be serving as non-executive commissioners. The President also nominated executive commissioners:
- Muhammed Sabo Lamido (Executive Commissioner for Finance)
- Mr Edu Inyang (Executive Commissioner for Exploration and Acreage)
- Justin Ezeala (Executive Commissioner for Economic Regulation and Strategic Planning)
- Henry Darlington Oki (Executive Commissioner for Development and Production)
- Indabawa Bashari Alka (Executive Commissioner for Corporate Services and Administration)
- Mahmood Tijani (Executive Commissioner for Health, Safety and Environment)
- Ms Olayemi Adeboyejo (Secretary and Legal Adviser)
It’s worth noting that Lamido and Adeboyejo were appointed by the previous administration, while Alka was appointed by President Tinubu in 2023. Inyang, Ezeala, Tijani, Babalola, and Jezhi are the fresh faces brought in by the current administration.
The NMDPRA Powerhouse
Over at the NMDPRA, Adegbite Adeniji will be leading a team of equally capable individuals. Chief Kenneth Kobani, a former minister of state for trade and ex-secretary to the Rivers State government, and Mrs Asabe Ahmed will serve as non-executive members. The President has also nominated:
- Abiodun Adeniji (Executive Director of Finance)
- Francis Ogaree (Executive Director of Hydrocarbon)
- Oluwole Adama (Executive Director of Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure)
- Dr Mustapha Lamorde (Executive Director of Corporate Services and Administration)
- Mr Yahaya Nasamu Yinusa (Executive Director, Distribution Systems)
- Adeyemi Murtala Aminu (Executive Director, Corporate Services)
- Ms Modie Ogechukwu (Executive Director, Economic Regulation and Strategic Planning)
- Barrister Olawale Dawodu (Board Secretary and Legal Adviser)
Adama was appointed in 2024, while Lamorde and Abiodun Adeniji were appointed by the Buhari administration in 2021 and 2022 respectively. Ogaree was also appointed in 2022. Barrister Dawodu is no stranger to the industry, having previously worked as a Financial Reporting Manager at Exxon’s Nigerian subsidiaries.
A Call to Action: Professionalism and Efficiency
President Tinubu didn’t just nominate these individuals; he also sent a clear message. He urged all appointees and nominees to carry out their duties with the highest level of professionalism, recognizing their critical role as regulators in the sensitive oil and gas sectors. He’s also asked the Senate to fast-track the confirmation process, which makes a lot of sense given how important these roles are for our country’s economic health. This is a positive step towards greater transparency and effectiveness in managing our oil wealth.
The Senate has already been busy, having recently confirmed Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan as the CEO of NUPRC and Engineer Saidu Aliyu Mohammed as the CEO of NMDPRA. With these new board chairmen and members coming on board, we can expect a more robust and strategic approach to how Nigeria’s oil and gas resources are managed. It is a complex industry, and having the right people in place is absolutely paramount.
This strategic appointment is a clear indication of the administration’s focus on revitalizing and optimizing the Nigerian oil and gas sector, a move that could have far-reaching positive implications for the nation’s economy and its citizens. We are watching with keen interest!
