A heartwarming reunion unfolded in Abuja as a four-year-old boy, Hope Evans, was returned to his mother’s arms after a harrowing two-month kidnapping ordeal. The child was abducted from his school in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, but thanks to diligent police work and the use of technology, he was found safe and sound in the nation’s capital.

  • Hope Evans, 4, kidnapped from Port Harcourt school.
  • Suspect, Blessing Okoi, lured child with treats.
  • Police tracked suspect to Abuja using technology.
  • Suspect apprehended and child safely recovered.
  • Okoi attempted to deceive authorities, claiming to be the boy’s mother.

The Kidnapping

On October 31, 2024, Hope Evans was attending Community Primary School Azubie in Port Harcourt when a woman, later identified as Blessing Okoi, approached him. Okoi enticed the young boy with biscuits and a boiled egg, managing to lure him away from the school premises unnoticed. The alarm was raised later that evening when Hope’s family realized he hadn’t returned home.

The Investigation

The family immediately contacted the school and discovered that Hope was last seen with a woman known as “Destiny’s mum.” They visited Destiny’s home but found it vacated. On November 1st, they reported the case to Trans Amadi Police Station, which later transferred the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). Suspecting that Okoi might have fled to Abuja, the victim’s aunt reported the case to the FCT Police Command. CP Olatunji Disu immediately launched an investigation.

The Rescue

Using technology, the police were able to track Okoi’s movements to Maraba, Abuja. After over two weeks of relentless pursuit, she was apprehended on November 29th. Four-year-old Hope Evans was found safe and well. Upon questioning, Okoi initially claimed to be Hope’s biological mother, even giving him a new name, “David Evans.” She also had another young boy with her, whom she claimed was her own child. However, her story quickly unraveled when confronted with evidence provided by Hope’s real mother.

A Happy Reunion

Hope’s mother arrived in Abuja on December 6th, and their reunion was a moment filled with joy and relief. CP Disu handed Hope back to his grateful mother. The police also contacted the mother of the other young boy found with Okoi. This case highlights the importance of school safety and the crucial role technology plays in modern policing. Blessing Okoi is in police custody and will be charged accordingly.

Increased Security Measures in Schools

In the wake of this incident, discussions about increased security measures in schools have gained momentum. Many are advocating for stricter visitor protocols, improved surveillance systems, and increased staff training to better protect vulnerable children. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and community involvement in ensuring the safety of our children.
