Chaos at Ibadan Poly: Renaming Sparks Student Uprising!
Academic activities at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, are completely halted! Furious students have taken to the streets, blocking entrance gates and the busy Sango-Eleyele Road. Why all the commotion? They’re protesting Governor Seyi Makinde’s decision to rename the institution the Victor Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, Ibadan.
The renaming announcement came during an interdenominational service honoring the late former governor Omololu Olunloyo. Governor Makinde intended to recognize Olunloyo’s contributions to education in Oyo State and Nigeria. Olunloyo, a prominent Ibadan figure, served as governor of the old Oyo State back in 1983.
“Our Name, Our Identity!” – Students Fight Back!
But the students aren’t having it. They argue that the renaming disregards the institution’s cherished identity. After blocking the Sango-Eleyele Road, the determined students marched to the Oyo State Government Secretariat Complex, disrupting activities there as well.
Despite the tension, the protest has remained largely peaceful. Students want their voices heard! They’re making it clear they won’t let this change happen without a fight.
What’s the Real Issue?
The core issue seems to be a lack of consultation. Students feel they weren’t given a say in a decision that directly impacts their school’s legacy. They’re not necessarily against honoring leaders, but they strongly believe it shouldn’t come at the expense of their institution’s identity.
As one student protestor passionately stated, “We are not against honoring leaders, but not at the expense of our institution’s legacy!”
Government Responds: Appeals for Calm
Security personnel are on the scene to maintain order and ensure the protest remains non-violent. Adebowale Falana, Chairman of the Oyo State Youth Development Agency, addressed the students, urging them to calm down and engage in dialogue with the government.
Governor Seyi Makinde, represented by his deputy, Adebayo Lawal, has appealed to the protesting students to return to their studies. Will the students listen? Only time will tell!
