Lai Mohammed Headlines Achievers University’s Record-Breaking Convocation: 72 Scholars Earn First Class!

Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State, is buzzing with excitement as it gears up for its momentous 15th Convocation and 18th Foundation Day ceremonies. This year is set to be a landmark event, with a record number of 705 graduands poised to receive their degrees and honours. The university is especially proud to announce that a remarkable 72 students have achieved the coveted First Class honours, marking one of the institution’s most outstanding academic performances to date. Former Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, will grace the occasion as the distinguished convocation lecturer. The ceremonies underscore Achievers University’s growing reputation as a leading private institution committed to academic excellence and innovation.

Achievers University Sets New Benchmarks at 15th Convocation

The Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Oyesoji Aremu, shared the exciting news at a pre-convocation briefing, highlighting the university’s steady ascent. “This year’s convocation is a testament to our unwavering commitment to academic prowess and providing a quality education that shapes future leaders,” Prof. Aremu stated. “We are immensely proud of all our graduands, especially those who have achieved First Class honours.”

Graduation Statistics Showcase Academic Excellence

Out of the 705 graduands, a substantial 653 will be awarded first degrees. The breakdown of achievements is as follows:

  • First Class Honours: 72 students
  • Second Class Upper Division: 318 students
  • Second Class Lower Division: 223 students
  • Third Class: 40 students

Beyond undergraduate studies, the university will also confer 49 postgraduate degrees, including eight Postgraduate Diplomas, six MBAs, 36 MSc degrees, and one PhD. This comprehensive offering reflects the university’s robust postgraduate programmes.

Lai Mohammed to Inspire with Keynote Address

A major highlight of the convocation will be the intellectual powerhouse, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, delivering the convocation lecture. His address, titled “Just Don’t Graduate, Innovate,” is scheduled for Friday at the prestigious Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed Auditorium. This theme perfectly aligns with the university’s drive to foster a spirit of innovation among its students.

Expanding Horizons: New Colleges and Growing Student Body

Achievers University continues to expand its academic landscape. The institution now boasts two colleges: the College of Medicine and the newly renamed College of Postgraduate Studies. These, along with nine faculties and 11 postgraduate programmes, offer a diverse range of study options. The university has seen a significant increase in student enrollment, with over 1,000 students matriculated this session. This surge in admissions reflects a growing public trust in Achievers University’s stable academic calendar and its dedication to delivering top-tier education.

Student Achievements Shine Bright

The university proudly recognized several students for their exceptional accomplishments:

  • Oni Favour Oluwafemi: Selected as one of 50 global participants for the Optica Amplify Immersion Programme in the USA, where he presented groundbreaking research on machine learning for neonatal imaging.
  • Bisola Iluyemi: A First Class Accounting graduand, she clinched the Ondo State Accountant Forum’s Best Final Year Accounting Student Award with an outstanding CGPA of 4.87.

The Accounting program itself has reason to celebrate, having recently secured ICAN reaccreditation, ensuring its graduates meet the highest professional standards.

Pioneering Law Graduates and Healthcare Partnerships

The pioneer law graduates from Achievers University have made their mark, achieving stellar results at the Nigerian Law School in July 2025. Three students graduated with First Class honours, and eight earned Second Class Upper Division, underscoring the quality of legal education at the institution.

In a significant stride for medical education, Achievers University has signed an MoU with the Federal Ministry of Health. This agreement designates the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo, as the clinical training base for the university’s MBBS programme. Construction of an academic building and a medical students’ hostel at FMC Owo is nearing completion, with commissioning expected in early 2026. The Central Medical Sciences Laboratory is also being developed into a national reference facility.

Technological Advancements and Accessible Education

Achievers University is at the forefront of technological integration in education. The ICT infrastructure has been significantly upgraded, featuring expanded Wi-Fi coverage, seamless adoption of Google for Education, automated student processes, and a new 250-seat CBT centre approved for external examinations. This commitment to technology enhances the learning experience for all students.

Accessibility remains a core value. Twelve programmes continue to be completely tuition-free, benefiting 319 indigent students. Additionally, numerous other programmes offer substantial scholarships ranging from 65–80 per cent. This demonstrates the university’s dedication to making quality education attainable for all, irrespective of financial background.

Distinguished Honorary Degrees and Accreditation Success

During the convocation, three eminent Nigerians will be conferred with honorary Doctor of Science degrees:

  • Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi (The Deji of Akure)
  • Prince Roland Olawumi Omowa (Diplomat)
  • Mr. Folajimi Akinloye Adetula (Business Mogul)

The university also reported successful NUC accreditation visits for seven programmes recently. Research output is on a continuous rise, supported by a national workshop on ethical health research. Even campus security has been enhanced through strategic partnerships with the Nigerian Army, NSCDC, and private security outfits, ensuring a safe learning environment for everyone.
