FCT Battles Vaccine Hesitancy: Religious Leaders Key to Child Health!

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration is pulling out all the stops to ensure our children are safe and sound! In a groundbreaking move, they’re joining forces with respected religious leaders to tackle the issue of children not getting their vital immunisations. This isn’t just about jabs; it’s about securing the future for every little Nigerian. The campaign aims to educate, encourage, and ensure that no child misses out on protection against dangerous diseases. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Religious leaders are being enlisted as champions for child immunisation.
  • The campaign targets Measles-Rubella vaccines under the Child Rights Act.
  • Immunisation services are completely FREE, safe, and effective in the FCT.
  • Parents can face legal consequences for non-compliance.
  • A special incentive: free health insurance for fully vaccinated children!

Fighting Fear with Faith: The FCT’s New Immunisation Strategy

In a move that’s got everyone talking, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) is reaching out to the heart of our communities – our religious centres! They understand that to truly protect our children, we need everyone on board, especially those who guide our spiritual lives. Mandate Secretary for Health Services and Environment, Adedolapo Fasawe, has been on a mission, visiting churches and mosques across Abuja to spread the word about the crucial ongoing Child Immunisation Campaign. The goal? To make sure every child gets protected against diseases that, frankly, have no business harming kids in this day and age.

Why Your Child’s Vaccination Matters (More Than You Think!)

Let’s get one thing straight: immunisation in the FCT is a no-brainer. It’s free, it’s safe, and it’s the best investment we can make in our children’s future. Fasawe made it crystal clear: ignorance or bad information shouldn’t be an excuse for leaving kids vulnerable. Think of it this way: why wouldn’t you give your child a shield against something that could seriously harm them? The administration is so serious about this that they’re even offering a fantastic incentive.

A Healthy Future, On the House!

In a brilliant move, the FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, has given the green light for free enrolment into the FCT Health Insurance Scheme (FHIS) for every child who gets fully vaccinated and attends public schools in the Territory. This is huge! It means not only are you protecting your child now, but you’re also setting them up for better healthcare access down the line. It’s a win-win situation!

The Law is Clear: No More Excuses!

While the administration is taking an advocacy approach, they’re also sending a firm message: non-compliance will not be tolerated. The FCTA has started enforcing the legal provisions to ensure that vaccination teams aren’t obstructed. This means parents, guardians, and even school owners who refuse or prevent vaccinations could face serious consequences. Remember, Sections 13 and 14 of the Child Rights Act are very clear. They state that parents and guardians have a duty to ensure their children are fully immunised. Denying a child this basic right is a violation, plain and simple.

What the Child Rights Act Says

It’s not just about getting a shot; it’s about a child’s fundamental right to health. The Act clearly mandates:

  • Parents and guardians must ensure full immunisation for their children.
  • Institutions have a responsibility to facilitate immunisation access.
  • Obstruction is a violation of a child’s right to health and protection.

Reaching Every Corner, Every Child

The advocacy visits by Dr. Fasawe were just one part of a massive citywide awareness campaign. The goal is to leave no stone unturned, ensuring that children in schools, churches, mosques, markets, and even playgrounds are all covered. Simultaneously, multiple FCTA immunisation teams have been deployed to every nook and cranny of the FCT, including those hard-to-reach areas and, of course, places of worship. This is about comprehensive coverage and making sure no eligible child is left behind.

Community Leaders Show Their Support

The message seems to be resonating! Religious leaders are stepping up. Senior Pastor and Regional Overseer of MFM Wuye International Headquarters, Pastor Edwin Etomi, praised the FCT Minister for his proactive stance on child health. He highlighted the importance of this grassroots engagement. Similarly, Evangelist Anselm Ikebata of Christ Holy Church International called on parents to take advantage of this crucial opportunity, stressing that vaccination is key to a secure future for their kids.

A United Front for Child Health

This campaign is all about inclusivity. It’s a collaborative effort involving traditional rulers, churches, mosques, community groups, NGOs, CSOs, and international partners like the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), UNICEF, WHO, and IVACA. The secretariat’s teams have been working tirelessly, going house-to-house to reach as many families as possible.

What Parents Are Saying

The response from parents has been largely positive. Many turned out in large numbers to get their children immunised. Some even expressed their thanks for the extra encouragement, like gifts and toys given to the kids, which made the experience more pleasant.

The Next Steps: Mop-Up and Enforcement

The FCTA isn’t slowing down. They’ve identified schools with low compliance and sent out reminder letters. A massive three-day citywide mop-up exercise is planned, mobilising 132 vaccination teams. This effort is in partnership with NPHCDA and other key stakeholders, including the Ansar-ud-Deen Society and Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Foundation. The campaign continued over the weekend with visits to major churches, demonstrating the administration’s commitment to reaching everyone.
