Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo is not playing games when it comes to healthcare. The Kogi State Government is investing heavily in remodeling over 200 primary healthcare centers. These centers are strategically located to ensure that virtually every community and political ward has access to quality healthcare. According to the State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, this is a game-changer for public health service delivery in Nigeria.
Massive Investment in Healthcare Infrastructure
Forget relying on foreign aid! Over 95% of the funding for these healthcare centers is coming straight from the State Government, with only a small contribution from the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund. These centers are not just getting a fresh coat of paint; they are being equipped with solar-powered water systems and staff quarters. This ensures that healthcare workers can live and work comfortably in these rural communities.
Fanwo noted, “About half of the projects have reached structural completion and are awaiting equipment and drugs, while others are progressing steadily.”
Boosting Rural Economies

The State Government funds their coverage under the BelloCare initiative, which also caters to pregnant women, children under five, and the poorest of the poor.
“While Kogi ranks 14th in the country in terms of total enrolment, we are doing even better when you consider enrolment as a percentage of population. We’re pushing aggressively to ensure no one is left behind,” Fanwo stated.
Healthcare Access for Students and the Informal Sector
Tertiary institution students now have access to healthcare for just ₦2,000 annually, paid alongside their tuition. This is a fantastic initiative that ensures students can focus on their studies without worrying about healthcare costs.
Even members of the informal sector, like okada riders and artisans, are being enrolled. The Ododo administration is building on the foundation laid by the previous administration to expand healthcare access to everyone.
Revitalizing Secondary Healthcare
The Federal Government is supporting the revitalization of one General Hospital per Local Government Area. Assessments have been completed, and the projects are expected to commence soon. This will significantly boost the state’s secondary health infrastructure.
Investing in Tertiary Healthcare
The Confluence University of Science and Technology, Osara, has commenced its MBBS program. The Reference Hospital in Okene has been converted into a teaching hospital for the university. Construction is ongoing to provide the needed clinical infrastructure.
Progress is also being made at Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, which is working to resume full medical training. Kogi State is determined to bridge the widening gap in medical manpower.
