Naija Joins the African Medicines Agency Treaty!
Big news dey happen! The Federal Executive Council (FEC) don give approval for Nigeria to ratify the African Medicines Agency (AMA) treaty. According to Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, this decision was made during their second meeting this year.
Why This Treaty Matters?
This treaty, originally initiated by the African Union Heads of State back in 2019, aims to create a unified standard for medical product regulation across Africa. So far, 37 member states don sign, and 26 don ratify. Now, Nigeria dey join the party!
According to the African Union, the AMA will enhance cooperation among member states in medicine regulation, promote harmonization of standards, and reduce reliance on external sources for medicines and vaccines.
Benefits for Naija and Africa
Prof. Pate explain say this treaty go help Naija and other African countries big time. E go boost our capacity to regulate medical products and ensure say we get access to safe, quality medicines. Plus, e go expand the market for products wey we make for here!
“And the import of this is, as we move in this direction, what we produce as part of our value chain expansion will have a much wider market. So, we’re expanding the market for products that can be manufactured here, just as other African countries; what they manufacture, we can also trade with them,” he said.
