Afenifere Appoints Oba Oladipo Olaitan as New Leader

Following the passing of Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Afenifere, the prominent pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, has officially appointed Oba Oladipo Olaitan as its new leader. The announcement was made at the group’s monthly general meeting in Isanya Ogbo, Ogun State.

Delegates from various states, including the six South-West states, Kogi, Kwara, and representatives from the Itsekiri community of Delta State, were present to honor Adebanjo’s contributions. The organization expressed its condolences to his family.

Who is Oba Oladipo Olaitan?

Oba Olaitan is no newcomer to the political scene. A lawyer admitted to the Nigerian Bar in 1971, he’s been a dedicated member of Afenifere for over four decades. Here’s a quick rundown of his experience:

  • Served as Political Adviser to former Lagos State Governor Lateef Jakande.
  • Member of the Lagos State Executive Council (1979–1983).
  • Member of the House of Representatives (1999–2003), leading the Alliance for Democracy (AD) caucus.
  • Previously held key roles within Afenifere, including National Financial Secretary and Deputy Leader.

Olaitan’s Vision

In his acceptance speech, Oba Olaitan emphasized Afenifere’s unwavering commitment to restructuring and true federalism in Nigeria. He promised to maintain unity within the organization as he steps into his new role. He will initially serve as acting leader until after Adebanjo’s final burial ceremonies.

Security: A Top Priority

Afenifere didn’t mince words when it came to the issue of security. The organization strongly condemned the escalating insecurity plaguing Nigeria. They highlighted the recent kidnapping of Prince Eniola Ojajuni, which has gained widespread attention on social media.

Afenifere urged the Ondo and Kogi State governments, along with all relevant security agencies, to take immediate and decisive action to ensure Ojajuni’s safe release and to safeguard the public.

Who Else Was There?

The meeting saw attendance from several notable figures, including Senators Femi Okunrounmu and Gbenga Kaka, and the former Deputy Governor of Ogun State, demonstrating the continued influence and reach of Afenifere.

Looking Ahead

With Oba Oladipo Olaitan at the helm, Afenifere is positioning itself to tackle the critical issues facing Nigeria, particularly security and the push for restructuring. It remains to be seen how their efforts will unfold, but one thing is clear: they’re ready to make their voices heard.

Fun Fact: Afenifere has been a major voice in Yoruba politics since its formation in 1951, originally as a political party (Action Group). The group has evolved to become a socio-political organization advocating for the interests of the Yoruba people.
