Female Farmers to the Rescue!

The Great Brave Women Association, a group under the Nigeria Women In Agriculture (NWIA), has kicked off an initiative to sell farm produce at affordable prices in Lagos State. And guess what? The people are loving it!

Why Are Prices So Low?

According to Mr. David Famuyiwa, the Executive Chairman of Agbado-Oke-odo LCDA, market surveys show that these female farmers are offering prices way below what you’d find in regular Lagos markets. This is great news for families trying to stretch their budgets!

How It Works: Cutting Out the Middleman

Mrs. Yetunde Olaniyan, the Secretary of Women in Agriculture, Lagos state, explained that the project aims to connect farmers directly with consumers. This cuts out those pesky intermediaries who often inflate prices. As she said, ‘we are not doing it because of profit but for relief to residents.’

Community Impact

The Agbado-Oke-odo LCDA is the first area to benefit, with hundreds of residents already taking advantage of the lower prices. The local council is even exploring ways to collaborate with the association to reach even more people. Mr. Olabowale Kasunmu, Community Development Committee (CDC) Chairman, also chimed in, describing the iniative as a welcome development for the residents.

What’s on Sale?

Residents are snapping up staples like:

  • Garri
  • Yam Flour
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Palm Oil
  • Rice
  • Beans
  • Catfish
  • Goat Meat

…and other essential household items! It’s a one-stop shop for affordable groceries.

Future Plans

This is just the beginning! The initiative is a pilot project with plans to expand to more communities across Lagos State. Imagine the impact if this model is replicated nationwide? Affordable food for everyone!

A Big Thank You

Mrs. Biola Raji, one of the happy beneficiaries, expressed her gratitude to the women farmers and the council chairman for making this possible. It’s a win-win situation for everyone involved.

The Bigger Picture

This initiative highlights the critical role women play in agriculture and food security. Did you know that women make up a significant portion of the agricultural workforce in Nigeria? Empowering female farmers is not just about fairness; it’s about building a more resilient and sustainable food system for the entire country.

Fun Fact: According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), supporting women in agriculture can boost agricultural output and reduce hunger!
